How the "Awwww" Factor Can Facilitate a Seamless House Sale

March 9, 2012 - Updated: March 9, 2012

Sometimes people have to sell homes under very stressful circumstances.

  • On the heels of a divorce or separation
  • As a result of a job change or unexpected transfer
  • After the death of a loved one

And under these conditions, an already demanding and hectic process is made that much more challenging.

But the right real estate agent can mitigate unpleasant circumstances by putting you at ease, diminishing the anxiety, and lifting the burden.  Knowing that you are in good hands is a really important consideration when you want to sell your home.

In fact, it’s arguably the most important consideration in choosing your real estate agent.

And after working in this business for three decades, I’ve seen it all.  I’ve held my clients’ hands and wiped their tears.  I’ve jumped up and down with joy as they celebrate a sale well above asking price.  I’ve reveled in the sense of pride certain clients have felt purchasing their very first home.

I’ve seen it all.

But I have to admit that last week, after one of my clients sold their house, I was particularly moved.

Two daughters came together, after their father had passed away, and put his house up for sale.  Needless to say, it was an emotionally draining experience for them.

I didn’t know them personally.  And they had interviewed several other realtors for the job.  So when the sale was complete, I couldn’t help but ask why they chose me, over all of the others they had met.  And the answer was surprising:

“Our father would have really liked you.”

Awwwwwwww.  I was touched.

It really made me feel good to know that in their time of grief, and under very stressful circumstances, that I was able to bring these girls some peace of mind.

If I could offer one piece of advice to anyone seeking to sell a home, particularly under stressful circumstances, it would be – make sure you are comfortable with the real estate agent.  Be certain that in your gut, it feels right.  It’s an important relationship so you want to make sure that it’s a good fit.
